DALLAS, Pa. — The Friedman Art Gallery at Penn State Wilkes-Barre is featuring a new student art exhibit, which runs through May 1 and showcases artwork created by students at the campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public during the gallery’s typical hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Students in the art and music history course, "Renaissance through Modern Times," studied various modern art and painting techniques. They also discussed environmental art and how to turn recycled materials into art. Using recycled plastic caps and hubcaps, recycled cardboard, paint and glue, students made their own “CAPS” (Creative Art Project for Students). The course is instructed by Jonathan Pineno, assistant teaching professor of music and art.
Students enrolled in "Perceiving the Arts," another course taught by Pineno, studied various artworks and painting techniques; then, they incorporated those techniques into their own creative interpretations of professional artist Bob Ross’ “Shades of Grey” painting.
Those enrolled in the "Rhetoric and Composition" and "Crime and Detection in World Literature" courses at Penn State Wilkes-Barre also created artwork displayed in the gallery. Accompanying a “storytelling with a point” assignment, those in the "Rhetoric and Composition" classes created artwork that reflected their stories and lessons for readers. Students in the crime stories course produced artistic renderings of their perspectives on crime storytelling, building on creative and intellectual communications. Both courses are taught by Christyne Berzsenyi, program coordinator of multidisciplinary studies and professor of multidisciplinary studies and English.
The Friedman Art Gallery, located in the Nesbitt Academic Commons, regularly displays the works of students and local artists, in addition to private art collections. The gallery strives to promote, encourage and exhibit artworks of professional and amateur artists from the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus and surrounding communities.
