UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Centre County District Attorney’s Office has formally recognized Sgt. Nick Sproveri of Penn State University Police and Public Safety (UPPS) as its 2024 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. This distinction underscores Sproveri’s exemplary investigative acumen, unwavering dedication to the pursuit of justice, and steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of the Centre County and Penn State communities.

A valued member of University Police since 2010, Sproveri currently serves as a patrol sergeant and previously served as a detective in the department’s Criminal Investigation Unit. His contributions have been instrumental in resolving complex investigations, advancing forensic methodologies, and providing support to victims and their families.

“Sgt. Sproveri’s ability to manage some of the department’s most demanding cases speaks volumes about his expertise and character,” said Stephanie Delaney, UPPS executive deputy chief. “Yet, it is his profound compassion — for victims, their families, and the pursuit of truth — that truly sets him apart.”

Noteworthy investigations led by Sproveri include:

  • Commonwealth vs. Grover (2018): Following the overdose death of a Penn State student, Sproveri conducted an extensive review of digital evidence and surveillance footage, resulting in the successful prosecution of the individual responsible.

  • Cold Case – Penn State Golf Course (2000): Reopened in 2021, Sproveri collaborated with agencies across state lines to integrate DNA analysis with modern genealogical technologies, ultimately identifying and apprehending a suspect more than two decades after the original crime.

“Sgt. Sproveri embodies the very principles that guide our profession,” said Wesley Sheets, associate vice president and chief of University Police and Public Safety. “He has brought clarity to complex situations, precision to demanding investigations, and compassion to every interaction. His professionalism and tenacity have benefited not only our department, but the broader community.”

The Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award is presented annually by the Centre County District Attorney’s Office to recognize exceptional service and achievement in public safety. Sproveri’s selection has garnered resounding support from both his colleagues and local stakeholders.

“University Police and Public Safety extends its sincere congratulations to Sgt. Sproveri and commends him for his outstanding contributions and exemplary service,” Delaney said.
