UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Libraries’ Office of Scholarly Communications and Copyright will offer two online workshops on copyright and fair use topics in summer 2026 for Penn State students, faculty and staff and the public.
Danielle Steinhart, interim copyright officer and head of the Office of Scholarly Communications and Copyright, will teach both workshops online via Zoom. Attendees are asked to please register in advance. Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR) program credit, formerly known as Scholarship and Research Integrity credit, will be available for both courses.
Copyright in One Hour
10-11 a.m. June 24

This workshop, designed for complete beginners, provides a brief introduction to U.S. copyright law, focusing on its impact on university research and teaching. Attendees will learn what copyright covers, how copyrighted works enter the public domain, and the different user rights contained in the Copyright Act, including fair use.

Does a person need to receive copyright permission to use that image in their article or that diagram in their course? When does copyright law allow use of copyrighted material without permission? This introductory workshop centers on U.S. copyright law’s fair use doctrine. Attendees will have a chance to apply what they have learned to hypothetical questions involving fair use in a university setting, including questions related to research and teaching.
