UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Through the Flower — a nonprofit art organization and partner with Penn State University Libraries — invites artists, scholars and educators to apply for the 2024 Judy Chicago Art Education Award.
Named in honor of one of the Feminist Art Movement’s key founders, the award is given annually and is accompanied by a $5,000 prize along with a certificate signed by Chicago. The application deadline has been extended to March 31.
This year, the award honors “Judy Chicago: Herstory,” a landmark retrospective on display through March 3 at the New Museum in New York. The Judy Chicago Art Education Award will be given to projects related to and inspired by the “City of Ladies,” an exhibition within this exhibition that contextualizes the work of Chicago as both an artist and a cultural historian while presenting an alternative to the patriarchal canon that has dominated art and cultural history.
The award was established in 2011 to support projects that use Judy Chicago materials found at any of the institutions that comprise the online Judy Chicago Research Portal. These institutions include:
-
Penn State University Libraries’ Eberly Family Special Collections Library, which houses the Judy Chicago Art Education Collection and includes the “The Dinner Party” Curriculum Project. The University Libraries’ Strategic Technologies team also developed and manages the Judy Chicago Research Portal;
-
The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center, home of the Judy Chicago Visual Archive;
-
Harvard University’s Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, which includes personal and professional correspondence, resumes, writings, drafts, research notes, journals, interviews, questionnaires, gallery catalogs and announcements, clippings and photographs related to Chicago’s personal and professional lives;
-
Nevada Museum of Art, housing Chicago’s comprehensive fireworks archive, including materials related to Chicago’s work with colored smoke, dry ice and fireworks;
-
The Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, which holds a significant archive of Judy Chicago’s prints and works on paper; and
-
Through the Flower Art Space Resource Center, including its collection of books, videos and online resources.
Proposals for the 2024 Judy Chicago Art Education Award should draw on the themes of institutional critique, the erasure or omittance of work by marginalized groups, and the notion of an alternative canon by which all historic contributions should be evaluated. I
Award submissions will be accepted online until midnight Eastern time on March 31. The 2024 award ceremony will be held in Belen, New Mexico, at the Through the Flower Art Space.
