UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have the potential to enable more personalized, efficient and innovative learning experiences, as much as they could undermine hard work and personal achievement. Students need to be guided to use these resources responsibly and effectively so they can be as equipped as possible for the modern workforce.

In recognition of these opportunities and challenges in higher education, Teaching and Learning with Technology, part of University Libraries, will host the third annual Digital Education Exchange Retreat (DEER) May 12–14, 2025, at the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle State Park. Penn State faculty from all campuses are welcome.

During the two-and-a-half-day program, participants will create Technology-Enhanced Instructional Materials (TEIMs) that leverage generative AI tools such as Notebook LM, ChatGPT Plus, and Adobe Express. Prior DEER retreat attendees who have experience teaching with generative AI materials will share their insights with new members of the DEER network.

Faculty also will explore manageable strategies to build course chatbots and generative AI multimedia, learn community-informed principles of effective uses of generative AI, and reinforce academic integrity and pride in personal achievement.

Costs for participants’ lodging, meals and mileage are covered. Interested faculty, adjunct instructors, lecturers and staff, such as instructional designers, who will teach during the fall 2025 or spring 2026 semesters are invited to apply by April 21. Applicants who are selected will be notified in late April.
