UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — With flu season approaching, University Health Services is encouraging Penn State students to get vaccinated at its annual student flu vaccine clinics, part of the #StoptheFluPSU campaign.

Clinics will be held at Alumni Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center and at the Student Health Center from early October through mid-November.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, lead to hospitalization or death. College campuses are especially susceptible to rapid transmission because of close living quarters and high levels of social interaction.

An annual flu shot is the most effective way to reduce the risk of getting the flu, and vaccination has been shown to lessen the severity of illness in people who are vaccinated but still get sick. Students who skip vaccination risk missing classes and exams, falling behind academically and being unable to take part in campus activities.
