UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Flu season is approaching, and University Health Services (UHS) is encouraging students to get vaccinated at its annual student flu vaccine clinics and through the #StoptheFluPSU campaign.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, lead to hospitalization or death.

“College campuses are prime locations for rapid transmission and outbreaks of influenza due to close living and high levels of social interaction,” said Michael Wissemann, University Health Services nurse manager. “Annual flu shots are the best way to reduce the risk of getting the flu and are shown to lessen the severity of illness in people who are vaccinated but still get sick.”

Wissemann added that students who skip vaccination risk missing classes and exams, falling behind academically, and being unable to participate in social activities.

“Students who get vaccinated against the flu contribute to the overall health and well-being of the Penn State community,” he said. “We want our students to stay healthy, engaged, and focused on their Penn State experience, and flu prevention is an important part of that.”
