UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — HUB-Robeson Galleries presents In Dreams, a new installation by Philadelphia-based sculptor Darla Jackson, on view July 3 through Sept. 20 in the Exhibition Cases on the first floor of the HUB-Robeson Center.
About the exhibition
The exhibition features 100 sculptural rabbits, each transformed by a unique handcrafted mixed-media mask and paired with a specific song. While the sculptures share a common form, each mask introduces its own visual language and personality. One original gray clay rabbit stands apart from the others, reinforcing the exhibition's exploration of sameness and individuality.
Constructed from materials including textiles, paint, found objects and layered surfaces, the masks reflect individual character and lived experience. The accompanying songs, selected collaboratively by Jackson and her family, deepen those connections by linking each sculpture to memory, emotion and personal significance. Together, the masks and music create a series of emotional portraits that suggest identity is shaped not only by appearance, but also by relationships, experiences and cultural influences.
Through repetition and variation, "In Dreams" invites viewers to reflect on the ways identity develops within families and communities. Rather than relying on literal likeness, Jackson's work explores how memory, inheritance and shared experiences influence how people understand themselves and recognize one another.
Closing reception Sept. 17
A closing reception and public conversation with the artist will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. The event is free and open to the public.
Jackson earned a bachelor of fine arts in sculpture from Moore College of Art & Design and is the founder of the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, a community-based sculpture studio established with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Arts Challenge. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she currently serves as a medallic artist for the United States Mint in Philadelphia.
The HUB-Robeson Galleries Exhibition Cases are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the academic year, excluding University breaks and holidays.
