CAPS encourages instructors and student leaders to utilize ‘Life Hack’ kits

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State student organization leaders and instructors can utilize "Life Hack" kits from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to intertwine mental health information and crisis prevention into their organization or classroom experiences.

Life Hack kits are wellness packages that help students navigate and demystify various human experiences such as anxiety, imposter phenomenon, motivation, belonging, and overall wellness. These are not physical kits but a carefully curated, step-by-step list of resources, information and opportunities for students. These kits allow students to use these items in their own time.

“Integrating emotional wellness into the classroom enhances the student-teacher relationship,” said Stephanie Stama, assistant director of community education and outreach at CAPS. “Research points to a number of student outcomes as a result of positive student-teacher relationships, including self-esteem, emotional well-being, and resilience. Life Hack kits are a doorway to making important connections toward positive student outcomes.”

The CAPS Life Hacks webpage provides suggestions on how to make it a part of the class experience through various options such as reflection or discussion posts. The kits can be utilized by integrating them into the class wellness experience and as extra credit/points, and do not require additional in-class time if the syllabus is already prepared.  While CAPS does not provide proof of completion or attendance, the kits offer suggested methods for students to convey learning and takeaways to receive credit.

For student organizations, Stama said the kits are a great way to enhance the organization’s wellness experiences. Student leaders can guide their organizations through discussion, vulnerability, and connection.

If instructors or student organizations are seeking opportunities for live participation, "Life Hacks: LIVE!" is offered each semester via Zoom. Hosted by CAPS clinician Jason Yoder, these engaging gatherings address goal setting, narrating your own story, connection/belonging and living in congruence with your values.
