UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Campus Recreation has opened the newly renovated Gym 2 inside the Intramural (IM) Building, which officially debuted Aug. 24. Funded by the University Park Fee Board, the updated space provides 12,718 square feet of informal fitness opportunities, including a 1,695-square-foot attack indoor turf with hashmarks designed for elite-level training, ensuring those who are not varsity athletes still have access to high-quality facilities. Club sports participants and recreational athletes can benefit from this elite-level training space, making it a valuable and accessible resource for the entire Penn State community.
Campus Recreation will host an open house for Gym 2 on Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members are encouraged to stop by, explore the renovated space, and connect with staff who will be available to answer questions and provide equipment overviews before their next workout.
The renovation introduced rubber flooring that helps reduce vibration and noise, making working out smoother. In addition, there are eight custom power racks with Olympic platforms and equipment. The gym also features a 12-foot slam wall for high energy workouts with wall balls, 10 barbell benches in various styles, dumbbells ranging from 5 to 75 pounds will help to increase muscle strength, and Hammer Strength machines, including a smith machine to work out glutes and hamstrings.
“We’re incredibly excited to open the doors to the newly renovated Gym 2 in the IM Building — a space that reflects our commitment to providing top-tier fitness and wellness resources for students,” said Steve Kampf, senior director of Campus Recreation. “Thanks to the generous support of the University Park Fee Board, we’ve transformed over 12,000 square feet into a dynamic training environment equipped for everyone. This renovation not only enhances the student experience, but also expands opportunities for informal recreation, personal development and overall well-being.”
The newly renovated Gym 2 gives students more space and equipment for informal workouts, pick-up training and group exercise. The newest features of the slam wall, turf, racks and machines will provide students with the opportunity to build strength and skills. The space also supports personal mindfulness through self-guided workouts and Campus Recreation programs that promote overall wellness.
While the space is now open and available during all IM Building operating hours, additional enhancements are still on the way. Students and members can expect the installation of day lockers for extra storage, more dumbbells, new wall graphics and updated paint by the start of the spring 2026 semester.
All University Park students who pay the student fee have their Campus Recreation membership included, giving them access to Gym 2 and all other Campus Recreation facilities.
Campus Recreation has added a new wellness space for members called the Recharge & Roar Lounge. To learn more about the Recharge & Roar Lounge, visit the main floor of the IM Building. Faculty and staff can email campusrec@psu.edu to learn more about membership options.
