UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Adult Learner Programs and Services, a unit in the division of Penn State Student Affairs, has announced English student Kirti Arora as the recipient for the 2025 Outstanding Adult Student Award.

The award recognizes an exceptional adult learner at University Park who has overcome obstacles while furthering their education. Nominees balance multiple roles, serve as role models for other students, and achieve academically. Arora will receive a $500 grant and Penn State diploma case.

Leslie Laing, director of Adult Learner Programs and Services, said she values service on campus and in the surrounding community. She is the proud founder of the Adult Learner Opportunity Fund.

“It gives me great joy to recognize and honor nontraditional students pursuing their undergraduate degrees,” Laing said. “Kirti has overcome so many personal obstacles, displayed a tenacity evidenced by determination to succeed despite language barriers, financial obstacles, and governmental limitations. I commend Kirti for taking the road less traveled to further her education and for striving to impact our community and uplift all those in her spheres of influence. She contributes abundantly to the Penn State community by assisting other students, faculty and staff members.”

In addition to being an international student and a non-native speaker, Arora serves as a First Gen Ambassador for the Chaiken Success Center, is a member of the President Leadership Academy, currently is taking 19 credits, and works in the Pollock Dining Commons. Arora navigates the educational journey through self-expression, she said, by writing and creating art that channels emotions and passion as her aspirations become realities at Penn State. She has also been selected to the New York Academy of Art for a summer residency program.

“This award is not just a recognition; it’s a reflection of a journey from silent struggles to heartfelt smiles," Arora said. "Every step at Penn State has brought me closer to my dreams. I’ve come to believe that true belonging isn’t bound by geography for even far from my home country, I found here a warmth and emotional connection I had never known before. With deep gratitude, I carry this feeling proudly: We are Penn State.”

Grants for the award recipients are provided through the Adult Learner Opportunity Fund; visit the website for more information on how to support the fund.
