SHARON, Pa. — The Lartz Memorial Library on Penn State Shenango’s campus is celebrating 30 years of student, faculty and community support with a special celebration on Friday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In the mid-1990s, Reno Street extended through what is now the heart of the campus grounds. During this time, the campus purchased three buildings along Reno Street to be used as an academic learning center, bookstore and a standalone library in what was one of the largest expansions in the campus’ history. After a brief closure for renovations, the library building officially opened in 1996.
A formal naming ceremony was held in 1999, being named in honor of Vera Lartz, and in memory of her husband, Robert Lartz. The Lartz family had been long time supporters and benefactors of Penn State Shenango and contributed to the renovation of the library building itself.
The Lartz Memorial Library contains group and individual study spaces, computer workstations, a technology-enhanced classroom, Media Commons equipment and resources, and a stress-free zone. Students and faculty members also have access to reference and research assistance through Penn State library personnel. Since 2015, the library has been home to the Shenango Academic Resource Center (SHARC), the campus learning center, which provides professional and peer tutors to students free of charge. Additionally, the library has always been open to community residents to use the reference and circulation materials, as well as obtain borrowing privileges.
“We pride ourselves on the way this library evolved to be more than just books and computers,” said Jill Cataldi, library operations supervisor. “We have created a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that not only promotes research and studying, but relaxation and a sense of home. We also enjoy visiting with the members of the community who come through our doors just as much as we enjoy our time with our students and colleagues.”
The 30th anniversary celebration in the Lartz Memorial Library is free and open to the public, as well as the campus community. Snacks and drinks will be available, and the library's resources will continue to be available throughout the day.
