DUNMORE, Pa. — Starting college can bring a mix of excitement and nerves, and student leaders play a key role in helping first-year students navigate that transition. As part of Penn State Scranton’s efforts to welcome the class of 2030, it is introducing its New Student Orientation (NSO) Program leaders through a series of Q&As.
Orientation leader Stephan French
Stephan French is a first-year international student majoring in mechanical engineering.
Q: Why did you choose Penn State Scranton?
French: I chose Penn State Scranton because of the welcoming environment, smaller class sizes, and the opportunity to experience a diverse community while being part of Penn State.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new students?
French: Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. College can feel overwhelming at first, but getting involved and asking questions really helps.
Q: Why should new students get involved on campus?
French: Getting involved helps you make friends, build confidence, and feel more connected to campus. It also makes your college experience more enjoyable and memorable.
Q: What’s one must-have item or life hack for surviving your first year of college?
French: A planner or calendar app is a lifesaver. Managing your time well makes balancing classes, assignments and activities much easier.
Q: What’s been your favorite Penn State Scranton memory so far?
French: My favorite memory so far has been meeting people from different backgrounds and being part of campus activities that made me feel welcomed as an international student.
Q: How has being an NSO Leader impacted your college experience?
French: Being an NSO Leader has helped me grow more confident, improve my communication skills, and connect with new students while helping them feel comfortable starting college.
Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting college?
FrenchI wish I knew that it’s normal to feel nervous or unsure in the beginning. Everyone adjusts at their own pace, and it gets easier with time.
