Axaria Belcher is a third-year student majoring in criminology and a minoring in communication.

Q: Why did you choose Penn State Scranton?

Belcher: I chose Penn State Scranton because of its close-knit community and the amazing resources they provide. I value the small-campus environment, which offers a more personal and supportive experience with professors, staff and students, while still allowing me to earn a respected Penn State degree. Also, being a part of Penn State provides a strong sense of community and lasting connections that extend well beyond graduation.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new students?

Belcher: My biggest piece of advice would be to get involved on campus. That can look different for everyone, whether it is participating in a work-study opportunity, joining a club or organization, attending professors’ office hours, or simply stepping outside of your comfort zone. Getting involved is a great way to build connections, gain valuable experiences, and make the most of your college journey.

Q: Why should new students get involved on campus?

Belcher: After transferring from a large university where I was not very involved, my experience completely changed when I came to Penn State. I was eager to become more engaged, build meaningful connections, and take advantage of new opportunities, and I quickly realized how much more comfortable I felt doing so in a smaller campus environment. Getting involved through clubs, campus events, work-study opportunities, and other activities allowed me to meet new people, form lasting friendships, and develop a strong support system. I also believe these experiences help students grow both personally and professionally by strengthening leadership, communication, and teamwork skills while making their college experience more enjoyable and rewarding so get involved!

Q: What’s one must-have item or life hack for surviving your first year of college?

Belcher: I relied on my planner every single day! Investing in a good planner is extremely important because it helps you stay organized, manage your time effectively, and keep track of important assignments, deadlines and responsibilities.

Q: What’s been your favorite Penn State Scranton memory so far?

Belcher: My favorite memories were the simple memories I got to make with my best friends, classmates and co-workers. The Learning and Advising Center is the place to be, and I always enjoyed working with them and leaving with a good laugh. Also, the classes that feel like family are just the best and it really makes the difference.

Q: How has being an NSO Leader impacted your college experience?

Belcher: Being an NSO Leader has really just grown my love for Penn State. I love all of the opportunities I got to get involved and this was by far my favorite one. I learned a lot more about Penn State and my classmates through the training activates and group conversations we have had. Also just gaining important life skills like communication, values, leadership, and so much more, it was a well-rounded program that I think everyone should be a part of.

Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting college?

Belcher: Personally, I love to jump into something and already know all about it, but in college that is not the case. It is OK to not know everything and make mistakes. I changed my major three times to find something that aligned with all of my interest and strengths through resources at Penn State. Go in with an open mind and learn little by little by getting involved and exploring. Change can be a wonderful thing.
