DUNMORE, Pa. — Starting college can bring a mix of excitement and nerves, and student leaders play a key role in helping first-year students navigate that transition. As part of Penn State Scranton’s efforts to welcome the class of 2029, it is introducing its New Student Orientation (NSO) Program leaders through a series of Q&As.

Zamarra Vrabel is a fourth-year student majoring in corporate communication and minoring in business administration.

Q: Why did you choose Penn State Scranton?

Vrabel: I chose Penn State Scranton because of the welcoming atmosphere and community here on campus. Several of my other family members attended Penn State Scranton so it felt like the perfect fit for me as well. Growing up I always wanted to attend a Penn State school but also stay close to home. Penn State Scranton allowed me to do that, and I couldn't be happier about my decision to come here.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new students?

Vrabel: Don't be afraid to try new things and get outside of your comfort zone. This can be joining a club or making a new friend! Use your time at Penn State Scranton to learn new skills and find out what opportunities you can take advantage of to help you grow.

Q: Why should new students get involved on campus?

Vrabel: Getting involved on campus is so important and it truly makes your college experience way more meaningful. So many of the connections and friends I have made on campus came through being involved in different ways. Every experience helps you grow and improves your leadership skills.

Q: What’s one must-have item or life hack for surviving your first year of college?

Vrabel: My blue Stanley tumbler has been with me through it all, haha — I will probably even bring it to graduation as well. In all seriousness, I think the key to surviving and thriving in your first year of college is to ask lots of questions and be yourself!

Q: What’s been your favorite Penn State Scranton memory so far?

Vrabel: I have so many, but I would have to say hanging out with my friends on campus. Whether it is studying together or just chatting in The View Café, I can't wait to keep making great memories with them!

Q: How has being an NSO Leader impacted your college experience?

Vrabel: Being an NSO Leader was the first step I took in becoming more involved on campus and I am so grateful I took that leap into involvement. Since then, I have become more involved, and I enjoy being the first person to welcome students to Penn State Scranton. My NSO leaders had a positive impact on my first experiences here and I am happy to be able to be that person for someone else.

Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting college?

Vrabel: I wish I knew that being involved on campus isn't as stressful as it seems at first. I would have gotten involved way sooner because it has been such a great experience for me!
