DUNMORE, Pa. — Starting college can bring a mix of excitement and nerves, and student leaders play a key role in helping first-year students navigate that transition. As part of Penn State Scranton’s efforts to welcome the class of 2030, it is introducing its New Student Orientation (NSO) Program leaders through a series of Q&As.
Orientation leader Elizabeth Anolfo
Elizabeth Anolfo is a third-year student majoring in corporate communication and minoring in IST.
Q: Why did you choose Penn State Scranton?
Anolfo: I chose Penn State Scranton looking for a forever home. I wanted somewhere that would bring the real me out, and that's exactly what I got. There is a sense of family as soon as you meet everyone, you get close with people and those memories you make are everlasting.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new students?
Anolfo: Do not be afraid to do anything on your own, it truly is the one thing that opens your perspective. Even if you want to do something but you don't have anyone, still do it! Believe in yourself always and forever. You might meet new friends or become a leader!
Q: Why should new students get involved on campus?
Anolfo: Getting involved is so helpful. If you're nervous about meeting people, get involved! You'll easily meet people and become a leader of yourself!
Q: What’s one must-have item or life hack for surviving your first year of college?
Anolfo: A water bottle, it's so important to stay hydrated throughout the day, and it's something that everyone always forgets.
Q: What’s been your favorite Penn State Scranton memory so far?
Anolfo: Attending THON for the first time impacted me so much, after raising money for our campus, all our hard worked showed. It showed me that Penn State is a family. No matter where you go after, Penn Staters are always there to help each other out.
Q: How has being an NSO Leader impacted your college experience?
Anolfo: I've become a leader in life being involved with NSO. I've had so many past students in my group come up to me and say that I eased their transition into college. NSO has built my own confidence and character up, and meeting all the incoming students is always welcoming.
Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting college?
Anolfo: Do not let people speak for you, speak up for yourself always and know what you can or can't do. Don't let others dictate your work ethic or your character; you are here for a reason, you belong always.
