DUNMORE, Pa. — Starting college can bring a mix of excitement and nerves, and student leaders play a key role in helping first-year students navigate that transition. As part of Penn State Scranton’s efforts to welcome the class of 2030, it is introducing its New Student Orientation (NSO) Program leaders through a series of Q&As.
Orientation leader Alexander Whittaker
Alexander Whittaker is a fourth-year student majoring in accounting.
Q: Why did you choose Penn State Scranton?
Whittaker: I chose Penn State Scranton because of the school's reputation and its proximity to my house.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new students?
Whittaker: Get as involved as possible.
Q: Why should new students get involved on campus?
Whittaker: It's a fulfilling experience where you can build many new relationships with the community around you.
Q: What’s one must-have item or life hack for surviving your first year of college?
Whittaker: Bring a thermos that is filled with ice that you can refill throughout the day.
Q: What’s been your favorite Penn State Scranton memory so far?
Whittaker: My favorite memory of Penn State Scranton was the Spring Break Survival Rave. I loved how interactive it was.
Q: How has being an NSO Leader impacted your college experience?
Whittaker: I know it'll bring me excitement to meet the new students and give them as much guidance as possible.
Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting college?
Whittaker: I wish I knew how important it was to be involved and network with others.
New Student Orientation
