SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. — For Sadie Sitlinger, a Penn State Schuylkill education provided more than classroom knowledge — it created a direct pathway to a career in healthcare before she even graduated.
Sitlinger, who recently earned her associate degree in radiological sciences from Penn State Schuylkill, is now working full-time as a radiologic technologist at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center after receiving a job offer six months before graduation.
Her journey from student to healthcare professional began during her clinical experience, which played a critical role in preparing her for the workforce and helping her establish connections in the field.
“During my clinical, I was offered a paid internship while still in school,” Sitlinger said. “I worked a few hours each week, and later, they extended an offer for a full-time position.”
Sitlinger said Penn State Schuylkill’s radiological sciences program equipped her with the technical skills, hands-on experience and confidence needed to transition directly into a professional role.
“My time at Penn State Schuylkill prepared me well for my role as a radiologic technologist by giving me a strong foundation in both technical skills and patient care,” she said. “The hands-on clinical experience helped me apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations, building my confidence and competence.”
She credited the program’s faculty and coursework for helping her feel career-ready before graduation.
“The professors were fantastic — very knowledgeable, supportive and approachable,” Sitlinger said. “Their dedication and real-world experience made learning engaging and practical, which really helped me feel ready for my career.”
Sitlinger said the clinical component of the program was especially valuable because it allowed employers to see her skills and work ethic firsthand.
“My clinical experience helped me get both my internship and my full-time job,” she said. “During clinicals, they first saw me as a student and offered me an internship. As I continued to grow and gain experience, they saw my potential as an employee and eventually offered me a full-time position.”
Penn State Schuylkill emphasizes experiential learning opportunities across its academic programs, helping students gain real-world experience through internships, clinical placements, undergraduate research and partnerships with employers throughout the region and beyond.
For Sitlinger, that experience eliminated much of the stress often associated with searching for a job after graduation.
“As soon as I accepted the full-time job, it was like a weight off my chest,” she said. “It feels good and refreshing.”
Now working full-time in the healthcare field, Sitlinger said she already is looking ahead to future career goals, including becoming cross-trained in mammography.
“While I really enjoy working in X-ray, especially at this stage in my career, I would also love the opportunity to work more closely with women and make a positive impact on their health,” she said.
Sitlinger encourages current students to fully embrace their clinical experiences and take advantage of every learning opportunity available to them.
“Be willing to get involved, perform the X-rays and take every opportunity to learn,” she said. “Even if certain exams are difficult or stressful, don’t avoid them. Challenging yourself will help you grow and build confidence.”
