UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A new type of eco-friendly glass developed by researchers at Penn State offers higher crack resistance, potentially allowing for thinner, lighter and more sustainable products.
“LionGlass” will be the subject of PSAA Presents: EMS Showcase, an event hosted by the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences in partnership with the Penn State Alumni Association.
The event will take place at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Steidle Building on the University Park campus, Room 401. A $5 registration fee for those attending in person will include light refreshments. The presentation also will be available for free online.
“LionGlass” requires less energy for production, lowering the melting temperature by 300-400°C and cutting energy use by about 30%. A patent for this innovative glass technology has been filed.
The “LionGlass” team secured its first corporate partnership with Italian glassmaker Bormioli Luigi. Their collaboration aims to scale up the production of the glass, starting with luxury beauty products, while exploring various compositions for different applications.
John Mauro, the Penn State professor of materials science and engineering who led the development of “LionGlass,” will discuss its creation and its potential.
Mauro earned bachelor’s degrees in glass engineering science and in computer science, and a doctorate in glass science, all from Alfred University. He joined Corning Inc. in 1999, where he served in various capacities, including senior research manager of the Glass Research department.
He is the inventor or co-inventor of several new glass compositions for Corning, including Corning Gorilla Glass products. He is a pioneer in the use of physics-based modeling for the design of new glassy materials and is the inventor of new models for supercooled liquid and glass viscosity, glass structure and topology, relaxation behavior, and thermal and mechanical properties.
Mauro joined the Penn State faculty in 2017.
