UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Sustainability is kicking off its second year of sustainability career webinars with "Using AI in Sustainability Careers" from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Attendees may join in person in HUB 131 with a pizza watch party, or synchronously over Zoom. Both options are free and open to all, and attendees can register at this registration link.
This webinar will feature experts who work in sustainability fields discussing how artificial intelligence tools have helped them craft new approaches to solving sustainability challenges. They will offer guidance and expertise to current Penn State students who might be curious about how they got where they are and what their day-to-day life is like. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to make the most of their time at Penn State in order to set themselves up for the best possible career trajectory.
Scheduled speakers:
- Eli Andrews, adjunct instructor of management and organization in Penn State’s Smeal College of Business and founder and CEO of civicIQ-re
- Amy Schirf, education coordinator from the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority, who will discuss using AI to identify recyclables in waste sorting
- Nasim Motalebi, a former Penn State faculty member now working with the United Nations’ food program who will address how AI can better target food aid.
- Brooke Tvermoes, a board-certified toxicologist who serves as director within IBM’s Chief Sustainability Office
This event is the first in a series of three fall sustainability career webinars offered by Penn State Sustainability to help students advance their understanding of the skills and opportunities relevant to the field. The conversations are designed to help Penn State students envision sustainability career paths and meet alumni and experts with connections to the University working in a variety of sustainability careers.
All webinars are free and open to all, and aimed at students early in their career exploration who want to learn more about what is possible.
“The career webinars have served as a bridge between Penn State alumni and students to show them what a career in sustainability looks like at different stages,” said Edith Rivadeneira Villavicencio, sustainability career and alumni programming intern for Penn State Sustainability. “They have contributed to student success by giving all Penn State students direct access to successful alumni and experts with connections to the University.”
