UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Sustain Penn State will host a screening of “Sally” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8 as part of the Intersections Film Series. The event will feature two introductions, including one by Laura Guertin, distinguished professor of earth and sciences at Penn State Brandywine, and will offer viewers an opportunity to explore themes of sustainability, equity and social change through the life of trailblazing astronaut Sally Ride.

This award-winning documentary explores Ride’s groundbreaking achievements as the first American woman in space, while also examining her legacy as a scientist, educator and advocate for inclusion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through archival footage and personal reflections, the film highlights both her historic accomplishments and the broader barriers she helped to challenge.

The screening will take place virtually and will provide viewers an opportunity to consider how representation, access and inclusion shape both scientific fields and wider societal systems. Registration is required at this link.

“'Sally' is an important movie that highlights the historical accomplishments of Sally Ride to fight for equality of all kinds,” said Julius Camper, student and public programming coordinator for Sustain Penn State.

The event is part of Sustain Penn State’s Intersections Film Series, which brings together diverse perspectives on sustainability by examining its connections to social justice, public policy and lived experience. Through storytelling and dialogue, the series aims to deepen understanding of complex global challenges while fostering meaningful community engagement.

Sustain Penn State, a unit of Penn State Sustainability, supports initiatives that advance the University’s commitment to the global Sustainable Development Goals while aligning with institutional priorities, including enhancing student success, fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, and increasing land-grant impact.
