UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Matt Goldberg, director of experimental research at the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, will discuss persuasion, politics and public engagement in a talk at 1 p.m. on Feb. 24 in the Earth and Environmental Systems Building at Penn State University Park. The talk, which is part of the Penn State Climate Consortium’s series Climate Conversation Café, will be available both in person and online. Registration is required.

The conversation will explore what it means to study climate change through the lens of communication research, with a focus on how people make sense of uncertainty, disagreement and declining trust in institutions. Janet Swim, professor of psychology and associate director of the Climate Consortium, will host the discussion.

Goldberg’s research centers on persuasion, social influence and strategic communication related to climate change, renewable energy and other pressing environmental, social and political issues. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and scientific reports, and his work has been cited by major outlets including The New York Times and The Washington Post.

He was named a Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science in 2022 and received the Early Career Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association’s Division 34 in 2023. Goldberg is also a co-founder of XandY, an independent research and strategy firm.

Goldberg is also scheduled to present “Strategic climate communication research for real-world impact” at 4 p.m. on Feb. 24 in the Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library. His visit is sponsored by the Bellisario College of Communications Sustainability Council.
