PETERSBURG, Pa. — The Penn State and local communities can welcome the arrival of fall at the Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center Fall Open House on Saturday, Sept. 12, with free hands-on activities, wildlife programs, live music, guided walks and opportunities to explore the outdoors.
The annual event, taking place from 1 to 4 p.m., invites visitors of all ages to discover the changing season and learn more about Shaver’s Creek’s programs and natural surroundings. Penn State students can sign up for free shuttle service to and from the University Park campus.
Shaver’s Creek, part of Penn State Outreach, was founded in 1976 as a resource for the community and as a field laboratory where Penn State students can get hands-on experience learning and teaching about the natural world. The open house is part of a yearlong celebration in honor of the center’s 50 years as a place of discovery.
“For half a century, Shaver’s Creek has been connecting people to people and people to nature, and those connections are more important than ever,” said Anna George, executive director of Shaver’s Creek. “Our Fall Open House is the perfect chance to come out to explore the center, learn about the natural world, embrace your curiosity and just have fun.”
The event will feature scavenger hunts, guided meditation in the tranquil Aerie Reflection Garden, forest bathing, a monarch migration station, nature journaling, plant printing and bird identification with Shaver’s Creek team members.
The Shaver’s Creek Wildlife Education team will lead the community on a tour of the Klingsberg Aviary to meet the center’s resident bird ambassadors and the Litzinger Herpetarium to explore local amphibians and reptiles.
