‘Research Readiness’ workshop series begins for undergraduates

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Undergraduate students at Penn State interested in research are invited to participate in a series of virtual sessions designed to help them get started, find opportunities and succeed in their research endeavors.   

Presented by Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring and University Libraries, "Research Readiness" sessions will cover a range of topics, from navigating library resources to learning about research ethics and securing funding. Students who complete at least five sessions will receive a certificate of completion that can be added to their resume or CV. Attendees are asked to register in advance for each individual session at urfm.psu.edu.   

  • “Getting Started with Research” — Sept. 10, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

    • Hear from a panel of undergraduate researchers on how to find opportunities, approach mentors and make the most of a research experience. 
  • “Ask a Faculty Researcher” — Sept. 17, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. 
    • A panel of faculty research mentors will discuss the research experience, how to connect with mentors and what it takes to become competitive in securing a research opportunity.  
  • “Research Ethics: Compliance, Safety, AI” — Sept. 24, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m
    • What ethical issues do researchers need to consider? What training exists to support research safety and compliance?  The Office for Research Protections will be on hand to discuss their role and resources. The second half of the session will cover questions like; how does course credit work for research experiences? Can you get paid? How about volunteering? What funding exists? 
  • “Citation Management” — Oct. 1, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. 
    • This session will introduce two popular citation managers, showing how to collect, organize and cite resources for research projects. 
  • “Literature Review Foundations” — Oct. 8, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.  
    • Learn the basics of writing a literature review and how to find, collect, and organize your sources in this workshop. 
  • “Independent Research and Joining the Scholarly Conversation” — Oct. 15, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.  
    • Discover how to conduct independent research and where to present your results in this session. 
  • “Summer Research Opportunities” — Oct. 22, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.  
    • This session, co-presented with The Office of Science Engagement, the Center for Engineering Outreach and Inclusion and Penn State Global will explore summer research opportunities, including Research Experiences for Undergraduates, international programs and funding for independent projects.
