Nese College of Nursing Alumni Society celebrates 2025 alumni award recipients

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing and its Alumni Society Board presented awards to undergraduate and graduate students, engaged alumni, faculty and staff at the annual Awards Celebration reception and dinner at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center.

Student awards recognize academic achievement, leadership skills and contributions to the college, community and the University. Alumni awards recognize alumni who have a record of significant professional achievements and acknowledge their dedication to the college and their respective communities. Similarly, college awards acknowledge faculty, staff and students for their dedication. Awards and recipients include:

Alumni Society Board awards

  • The Paula Milone-Nuzzo Alumni Volunteer of the Year Award: Lois Thompson, certified school nurse with the State College Area School District. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing in 1991 and master of science in nursing education 2019.

  • The Emerging Professional Award: Parker Rohrbaugh, nurse practitioner at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He earned his bachelor of science in nursing in 2017.

  • The Alumni Achievement Award: Leslie Treas, nursing textbook author and founder of Assessment Technologies Institute LLC (ATI), the standard NCLEX test preparation software in the U.S. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing in 1983.

  • The Undergraduate Student Service Award: Alexandra Reaves, fourth-year nursing student.

  • Graduate Student Service Award: Azza AL Harrasi, doctoral candidate. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing in 2017.

  • Doctoral Student Academic Excellence Award: Nahida Akter, doctoral candidate.

Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing Awards

  • Staff Appreciation Award: Steve Koths, Director of Finance and Administration Operations.

  • Janet A. Williamson Excellence in Teaching Award: Abby Hackenberger, associate teaching professor. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing in 2017 and her doctor of nursing practice in 2022.

  • Beta Sigma Student Achievement Award: Mikayla Kupstas, fourth-year nursing student.

  • Kim Gedney-Guzik Memorial Award: Chloe Winkworth, fourth-year nursing student.

  • Norris Himes Adult Critical Care Student Nursing Award: Lydia Stutzman, fourth-year nursing student

  • Janet A. Williamson Graduate Award in Nursing: David (DJ) Schnabel, Jr., dual-title doctoral candidate in nursing and clinical translational sciences.

  • Mark T. Kolanowski Award for Excellence in Ph.D. Nursing Research: Azza AL Harrasi, doctoral candidate. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing in 2017.

Award recipients have been formally recognized by the college as exemplifying what it truly means to be a nurse, nurse educator or support staff.
