CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Brenna Traver, associate professor of biology at Penn State Lehigh Valley, has been recognized with a prestigious honor from the Entomological Society of America, highlighting her sustained contributions to the field of entomology and her service to the scientific community.

Traver received the Herb T. Streu Meritorious Service Award from the Eastern Branch (EB) of the Entomological Society of America (ESA), the largest organization in the world serving the professional and scientific needs of entomologists and individuals in related disciplines. Established in 1991, the award recognizes members who have made significant and lasting contributions to the society through leadership, service, and engagement.

Presented at the EB’s annual meeting, the award is given selectively and reflects the judgment of the organization’s Awards Committee, which identifies individuals whose impact has meaningfully advanced the mission of the society.

“It’s an honor to be selected among so many incredible people who contribute to the society,” said Traver. Recognized for her involvement, Traver served the members at large for two terms as chair and co-chair of the student competition for the EB of the ESA since 2018. “Each year, I enjoy watching the student talks and following their progression through their graduate careers, witnessing their growth as they mature as scientists.”

Traver noted that her contributions to the society don’t “feel like work” but rather a privilege to be a part of a program that promotes developing entomologists.

Simon Zebelo, current president of the EB ESA and professor of entomology and plant biology at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, praised Traver’s long-term commitment to the society.

“Dr. Brenna Traver’s selection for the Herb T. Streu Meritorious Service Award exemplifies her extensive years of impactful contributions to our community, notably through her leadership of the student competition, which has established a nurturing space where students are supported, challenged, and motivated to develop as scientists," Zebelo said.

Traver’s work in entomology has centered on advancing understanding of pollinators and supporting collaborative efforts within the scientific community. In addition to her research, she has contributed extensive service to the EB of the ESA, helping to strengthen connections among researchers, educators, and practitioners across the region.

At Penn State Lehigh Valley, Traver plays a key role in shaping the biology program, where she supports students in developing both scientific knowledge and real-world skills. As program coordinator, she works closely with students preparing for careers in research, healthcare, environmental science and biotechnology, as well as those pursuing advanced degrees in fields such as medicine, veterinary science and dentistry.

“Professor Traver’s recognition with the Herb T. Streu Meritorious Service Award reflects the depth of her commitment to the entomological community and to the advancement of pollinator science,” said Anibal Torres, chief academic officer at Penn State Lehigh Valley. “Her sustained leadership, generous service to the profession, and dedication to mentoring students exemplify the highest standards of academic citizenship. We are immensely proud of her and grateful for the impact she continues to make.”

The Biology program at Penn State Lehigh Valley focuses on the study of life at every level, from single-celled organisms to complex ecosystems. Students engage with topics ranging from disease research and vaccine development to environmental conservation and sustainable food systems. The program is taught by faculty with extensive research and industry experience, providing students with a strong foundation for a wide range of career paths.

Traver’s recognition underscores the impact of faculty who combine research excellence with meaningful service and mentorship — a balance that reflects Penn State’s broader commitment to advancing knowledge while preparing students to lead in their chosen fields, Torres said.
