UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — From cats and dogs to chickens, bearded dragons and potbellied pigs, Penn State faculty and staff have access to optional medical coverage for their pets through MetLife pet insurance. Plans cover services such as vaccinations, wellness visits, teeth cleaning, flea and tick medications, hospital stays, illnesses, surgeries, accidental injuries, X-rays and more.

For a monthly fee (premium), employees who opt into pet insurance will have coverage that can help reduce the financial impact of preventive and unexpected veterinary care. Plans are flexible and customizable based on the employee’s specific pet and budget needs. Faculty and staff can enroll anytime throughout the year by visiting the MetLife Pet Insurance website. No election is required in Workday during Benefits Open Enrollment.

Penn State Human Resources is holding a series of informational webinars at no cost over the coming weeks, highlighting the range of benefits available to faculty and staff heading into the 2027 Benefits Open Enrollment period. To learn more about MetLife pet insurance, webinars will be held from 9-9:30 a.m. on Oct. 15 and 9-9:30 a.m. on Oct. 30. Employees can access the Zoom link for the webinars by visiting the presentation and webinars page on the 2027 Benefits Open Enrollment website.

Each pet’s premium is based on factors such as age, breed, location and selected coverage amount. There are discounts available for multi-pet coverage, as well as for active military, veterans, first responders and healthcare workers.
