Note: As employees think about their benefits elections for 2027, Penn State News is publishing a series of stories designed to help employees make informed choices.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — With the MetLife legal plan, Penn State faculty and staff have access to the expert guidance and tools necessary to navigate a broad range of personal legal needs. Whether it's buying or selling a home, starting a family, caring for aging parents, or setting up an estate plan, the benefit provides protection at every step.
It is as easy as selecting an in-network attorney and making an appointment. There are no waiting periods, no copays, no deductibles and no claim forms when using a network attorney for a covered matter. And, for non-covered matters that are not otherwise excluded, the plan provides 18 hours of network attorney time and services per year.
For $14.33 per month, faculty and staff members get legal assistance for some of the most frequently needed personal legal matters – as do their spouses, children, parents, in-laws, grandparents and grandparents-in-law. Family members use their own login information when accessing services for themselves, so their specific purpose for using legal help can remain confidential.
Employees may enroll or unenroll from this plan during each open enrollment period. Outside of that period, changes can only be made due to IRS-qualifying life events like marriage, divorce, birth or adoption.
Penn State Human Resources is holding a series of informational webinars at no cost over the coming weeks highlighting the range of benefits available to faculty and staff heading into the 2027 Benefits Open Enrollment period.
