HERSHEY, Pa. — Cheers, laughter and heartfelt moments filled the halls of Penn State Health Children’s Hospital on May 28 as the Penn State Nittany Lions football team paid a special visit to young patients and their families.
Players and coaches spent the afternoon bonding with patients, including Four Diamonds and Children’s Miracle Network children and their families, through games, arts and crafts.
“I think it's a great perspective for the players, for myself, for all of us," said Head Coach James Franklin. “If the kids can just focus on being kids for an hour or two, playing Connect Four or coloring, that’s what we’re trying to help them do.”
This year marked the team’s 10th visit to the Children’s Hospital — a tradition cherished by both the hospital staff and the players.
One of the day’s most memorable moments came for 11-year-old patient Cameron Wamsher of Lebanon, who survived a severe trauma after being hit by a car three years ago. Believing he was there for a press conference about his recovery, Wamsher had no idea a surprise guest was waiting just outside the room.
After a brief Q&A, Franklin walked in the room and asked with a smile, “Cameron, I have a question, too — did anyone ever tell you that you look like Drew Allar?”
Surprise and excitement filled Wamsher’s face as he realized who was speaking to him. Franklin presented him with a jersey and a signed football. Wamsher then got to spend the rest of the afternoon sharing high-fives, throwing football and making lasting memories with members of the team.
