UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State has announced the induction of nine distinguished faculty members into the Emeritus Academy for fall 2025. The academy recognizes retired faculty who have made significant contributions through teaching, research, creative accomplishments and service, and who continue to be engaged members of the University community.
The Penn State Emeritus Academy is dedicated to fostering a vibrant community of retired faculty. It provides a platform for members to engage in intellectual and creative activities that contribute to the Penn State community and beyond. Academy members hold the title of academy professor.
The fall 2025 inductees are:
- Richard W. Robinett — Professor Emeritus of Physics, Eberly College of Science, University Park
- Roy B. Clariana — Professor Emeritus of Learning and Performance Systems, College of Education, University Park
- Stephen W. Schaeffer — Emeritus Professor of Biology, Eberly College of Science, University Park
- Margaret L. Signorella — Distinguished Professor Emerita of Psychology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Penn State Brandywine
- William J. Rothwell — Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Learning and Performance Systems, College of Education, University Park
- Jacqueline Bortiatynski — Emeritus Teaching Professor of Chemistry and former director of the Grove Center for Science Education, Eberly College of Science, University Park
- Roger L. Geiger — Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Education Policy Studies, University Park
- Ken Tamminga — Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture, Stuckeman School, College of Arts and Architecture, University Park
- Peter Denis Usher — Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and Astrophysics, University Park
“The Emeritus Academy is a powerful reminder that the impact of great faculty extends well beyond their active years of service,” said Ann Clements, associate vice provost for Faculty Affairs. “Our emeritus colleagues continue to teach, mentor, create and lead, strengthening the intellectual life of Penn State and serving as role models for lifelong engagement in scholarship.”
Membership in the Academy is granted through a nomination and review process that highlights excellence in professional achievement, leadership and continued commitment to the University’s values of teaching, research and service.
