UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Wael Jabr, assistant professor of supply chain and information systems at the Smeal College of Business, is the 2026 recipient of the Barash Award for Human Service.

Created in 1975 by the family of the late Sy Barash, the award honors a full-time member of the faculty or staff or student body on the University Park campus who, apart from his or her regular duties, has contributed the most to human causes, public service activities and organizations, or the welfare of fellow humans.

Nominators said Jabr makes sustained and selfless contributions to human causes, public service and the welfare of others.

He is the founder and president of the One Hand Foundation, which is dedicated to creating an inclusive, supportive and thriving community where everyone has access to the resources and support needed to thrive. Nominators said the high-impact, low-cost programs are inspired by the B.R.I.D.G.E.S. values: basic needs, resilience, inclusion, dialogue, growth, engagement and sustainability.

“Under his volunteer leadership, the foundation organizes monthly food hub distributions, seasonal mobile health clinics in partnership with the Penn State College of Medicine, other wellness fairs, spring socials that reduce senior isolation, and a back-to-school event in Philipsburg," a nominator said. These events — all spanning State College, Philipsburg and Clearfield — focus on providing resources such as providing supplies, books, nutritious food along with a positive engagement with local entities such as police, fire and transit services.

He also coordinates a monthly assistance program at the Centre County Correctional Facility, which offers support to prisoners that helps to affirm their dignity, and works to strengthen their connections with the community.

“Jabr’s service is genuinely inspiring and life-changing. He consistently meets people where they are, with compassion and understanding of their needs,” a nominator said. “Whether he is leading food distribution initiatives, supporting mental health programs, organizing interfaith community dinners, or providing financial stewardship nonprofit organizations, he approaches each endeavor with the same commitment, humility and excellence.”

Jabr serves as treasurer of the Mid-State Literacy Council and offers guidance for adult literacy programs across the region. He advises a Penn State student organization, collaborates with the Faith Leaders Network and public-safety partners, and co-organized the Malcolm X Centenary event with University and State College Borough partners.

“Collectively, Dr. Jabr’s record exemplifies a sustained and deeply rooted commitment to human welfare — service that extends far beyond the boundaries of his academic responsibilities,” a nominator said. “He personifies the spirit and ideals of the Barash Award and stands as a model of Penn State’s highest values. By honoring Dr. Jabr, the University is recognizing one of its most distinguished faculty members — an individual who truly embodies the essence of community service and selfless dedication to the betterment of others.”
