UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ting He, associate professor of computer science in the Penn State School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), was recently named to the 2024 Stars in Networking and Communications List by networking organization N²Women. The list recognizes women who produce outstanding research or industry results in the field of computer networking and communications.
“I am deeply honored to be listed alongside nine accomplished female professors and researchers from around the globe,” He said. “I am particularly grateful to be the only associate professor in the 2024 list. I am also grateful for the continuous mentorship and support provided by the leadership of EECS, particularly Dr. Tom La Porta, who generously nominated me for this award, as well as the colleagues I’ve had many inspiring discussions with.”
Founded in 2006, N²Women represents female presenting researchers in the fields of computer networking and communications. N²Women organizes events, workshops, mentoring opportunities and fellowships for graduate students and junior researchers around the country. Their lists and events help more than 2,000 members connect across the field of networking and communications.
Every year, N²Women features 10 women from around the world on their lists of Stars in Networking and Communications Professionals. They publish two annual lists: one recognizing “rising stars,” or researchers with less than 10 years of experience since obtaining their doctorate, and one recognizing “stars,” or researchers who have 10 or more years of experience since obtaining their doctorate. He’s selection as a 2024 N²Women Star comes after her recognition as a N²Women Rising Star in 2017.
“Ting is a world-class researcher and educator, and is a dedicated role model for women students and faculty,” said Tom La Porta, director of EECS, William E. Leonhard Endowed Chair and Evan Pugh Professor. “She is a great asset to our school and Penn State and is truly deserving of this recognition.”
He graduated from Peking University, China, with a bachelor of science in computer science and received her doctorate in electrical engineering from Cornell University. She is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a current member of the Association for Computing Machinery.
She has published more than 150 papers in refereed journals and conferences, two books and 14 patents. Some of her other recognitions include the 2021 IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Prize, multiple Outstanding Contributor Awards and Invention Achievement Awards from IBM, four Distinguished Technical Program Committee Member Awards from INFOCOM in 2016-2024, and multiple awards for Military Impact and Commercial Prosperity of Coreset Research by the International Technology Alliance in Distributed Analytics and Information Science.
He’s research interests include computer and communication networking, networked machine learning/inference, performance modeling and analysis, cloud computing and statistical inference. Aside from her time spent teaching as an associate professor, He is affiliated with the Penn State Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Engineered Systems and the Penn State Institute for Networking and Security Research.
