DuBOIS, Pa. — Those interested in transforming metal into their own handcrafted jewelry will have an opportunity to learn and develop their skills through beginner and advanced jewelry making and metalsmithing courses offered this fall by Penn State DuBois Continuing Education.
Both courses will be taught by Bobbi Shaffer Ingram, an experienced silversmith and jewelry maker and Penn State graduate. Ingram earned a master of fine arts degree in jewelry and metals from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has studios in DuBois and Amarillo, Texas. Her work ranges from art jewelry to wearable designs, and she has taught metalsmithing techniques to students through previous Penn State DuBois Continuing Education courses.
The beginner jewelry making and metalsmithing course will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 6 through Nov. 10, at Penn State DuBois. No previous metalsmithing or art experience is required.
Participants will learn fundamental metalsmithing techniques, including fabrication, piercework, surface treatment, annealing and cold joining. During the course, participants will apply those techniques to create two to three finished pieces, which may include pendants, brooches or rings.
“These courses provide a great opportunity for participants to learn by doing and see their skills develop as they create pieces of their own,” said John Brennan, director of Continuing Education at Penn State DuBois and Penn State Altoona. “Whether someone is trying jewelry making for the first time or returning to build on skills they already have, Bobbi brings the knowledge and experience to help participants explore their creativity while learning the techniques behind the craft.”
For those with previous metalsmithing experience, an advanced course will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 8 through Nov. 12, at Penn State DuBois. The course is designed for participants who have completed the beginner course or who already have knowledge of using a jewelry saw and basic metalsmithing techniques.
Advanced participants will build on those foundational skills through techniques like advanced fabrication and soldering, stone setting and torch enameling.
The registration fee for either course is $210. Basic materials are included in the registration fee. Participants are required to bring or purchase a small tool kit for use during the course. For those who do not already have the necessary tools, the estimated cost is approximately $70. A complete tool list will be provided following registration.
