Precaution, preparation urged ahead of winter storm hitting University Park this weekend

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The University Park community is advised to take precautions ahead of and during the major winter storm forecasted to impact the area beginning late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, forecasted to bring with it 10-20 inches of snow, wind gusts of 15-30 miles per hour and wind chill temperatures between -10 and -20 degrees.

In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory from 6 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday with wind chills expected to drop temperatures to -18 degrees in State College and neighboring communities.

The University and local authorities are asking the Penn State community and local residents to remain indoors on Sunday as road crews work to clear roads and sidewalks. Travel may be extremely difficult during the height of the storm, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour forecast. Given the strong winds accompanying this cold snow, drifting is expected to stretch the ability of crews to keep roads and sidewalks clear and may make travel dangerous even after the snowfall ends.

Penn State Student Affairs recommends students take time to plan ahead for winter weather to stay safe, connected and supported. Students are advised to get any supplies on Friday and Saturday that they may need on Sunday and Monday. Suggested essentials to have on hand and information on student support resources can be found on the Student Affairs website.

As the storm progresses, decisions will be made about on-campus classes, work, and other activities at University Park and communicated through PSUAlert.
