Resident assistants: Creating home away from home

MEDIA, Pa — Orchard Hall, Penn State Brandywine's on-campus residence, is more than just a building for students to rest between classes - it's where they gain independence, build community and support one another academically. At the very center of it are the resident assistants (RAs) who help make it feel like a true home away from home.

According to Jasmaine Price-Thornton, residence life coordinator, becoming an RA is a detailed process that involves applications, interviews, training, classes and mentorships to ensure the best candidates are selected. “You have to be focused,” Price-Thornton emphasized, describing the mindset required for success in the role.

Madison Ferguson, a fourth-year business major with a business analytics option and marketing focus, explained that while being an RA is a lot of work, it is also most rewarding. She said that watching residents grow throughout their journey — and being a part of it — is very fulfilling.

“I’ll be planning the events, making the flyers, getting the proper funding," Ferguson explained, adding that RAs must be prepared for the unexpected — beyond their regular duties, they are also on call.

Ironically, Ferguson said, this led to one of her favorite memories as an RA: When the fire alarm mistakenly went off in the early morning hours, the RAs and students gathered on the lawn, where they ended up watching the sunrise together and bonding over the unexpected moment.

Zibo Senome-Bridgers, a first-time RA, shared his excitement about stepping into the role. He explained that being an RA gives him the opportunity to connect with a wide range of people while also fostering his own personal growth. He said the role is pushing him outside his comfort zone and helping him strengthen both his technical and interpersonal skills.

“It makes me joyful because I am a resource for you and whenever you need me, I’m here for you,” said Senome-Bridgers.

Along with all the amenities and furnishings of Orchard Hall comes the experience and support provided by the resident assistants. Their personalities, perseverance and resources help make it a place to thrive rather than just a place to stay.

RAs are essential to making campus feel like home, serving as a vital link between students and campus departments to bring resources and support directly into the residence halls.

“In Residence Life, we do what we need to do to keep the ship moving,” said Price-Thornton, adding that RAs do more than keep an eye on things; they are there to help guide students to success.
