MEDIA, Pa. — Amy Yarlett joined Penn State Brandywine as the academic advising specialist, effective July 29. Coming from Widener University as the director of advising and retention systems, Yarlett said she is looking forward to getting to meet the students and building relationships with faculty and staff.
“We are delighted to welcome a seasoned professional adviser with a wealth of experience in student success and student academic development to the role of advising specialist at Brandywine,” said Jennifer Nesbitt, chief academic officer. “In her interviews, Amy spoke to the fact that she is motivated by her interactions with students. Students will find her a willing and energetic partner in their Penn State journey.”
After working in the private sector for over 20 years, Yarlett said, she wanted to work in the public sector at Penn State Brandywine. As she was surrounded by Penn State pride her whole life, coming from central Pennsylvania, she felt working at Brandywine would be a great opportunity.
“All my career has been in the private sector, so I really wanted to have more diversity in my professional experience and work at a public school. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and I was surrounded by Penn State pride my whole life,” she said. “I love Brandywine because I love the small institution feel while still having a large network.”
In terms of her goals, Yarlett said she wants to ensure students see the advising office as a helpful resource and help boost Brandywine’s student retention.
“I would like to make sure students see us as a resource and a tool for their success,” she said. “Retention is a huge priority for me as well, so I want to help students explore majors and select appropriate courses that will lead them to success and graduation at Penn State. I want to help improve the student experience and make sure their voices are heard.”
Outside of work, Yarlett said, she enjoys gardening, as she has her own garden at home full of vegetables and flowers. She also enjoys being out in nature, walking, listening to live music and watching soccer, specifically the Philadelphia Union.
