MEDIA, Pa. — Penn State Brandywine second-year student Colin Hess applies his knowledge of English in the Writing Studio where he helps other students strengthen their skills and reach their full writing potential — all while maintaining an exceptional academic performance.
Hess, an English major, has a wide range of interests for his future. He is considering paths such as news writing, teaching, professional tutoring, editing, publishing or sports writing — all fields that align with his personal interests.
To pursue these possibilities, Hess knew from early on that he wanted to prepare through a Penn State education.
“I’ve always wanted to come to Penn State,” Hess said.
After taking several writing-intensive classes, he said he discovered his passion for the subject, confirming that he had chosen the right major.
Hess explained that being an English major opens many doors and offers a broad range of opportunities.
“Career-wise, it can branch out into different areas and it’s all stuff I like doing,” he said, noting that he is also dedicated to helping others. So, when he was approached about a writing tutor position, he jumped at the opportunity to get his career started.
Now in his second semester as a tutor, Hess said he takes pride in helping other students reach their full academic potential.
As a peer writing tutor, he explained that students come to him with a variety of assignments they need assistance with.
“Recently, I had someone who needed help with their resume and a cover letter,” Hess said.
He approaches these sessions by using several types of visuals and examples to guide students.
“I never want it to seem like I'm taking the student's work and doing it for them,” Hess said. “I want to help the student and let them work through it.”
He expressed deep gratitude for this role, sharing how much he enjoys helping fellow students succeed in their classes.
Hess also acknowledged the guidance he received along the way, crediting much of his success to his former English instructor, Lisa Lindgren, who recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue the job.
