ERIE, Pa. — The Run for Women 5K run/walk at Penn State Behrend isn’t a typical 5K race. Sure, there are stopwatches, focused athletes and fierce competition. But there’s also a disc jockey, decorations, a photo booth and free ice cream.

The event, which is hosted by the Women’s Engagement Council (WEC) at Behrend, is less about pace and more about people. It’s a celebration of movement, community and a really good time ― and everyone is invited.

“This event has such great energy,” said Heather Cass, the race director and a WEC board member. “Whether you’re chasing a personal record or are just looking for a fun reason to get outside and move, you’ll fit right in. It’s one of those mornings where you leave feeling genuinely happy that you showed up.”

Registration for this year’s event, on Aug. 30, is open now at the Run for Women webpage.

The 3.1-mile run/walk begins at 8 a.m. at the Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Center (AMIC), on Technology Drive. The course is relatively flat: Participants will travel along Technology Drive and through a full loop of Knowledge Parkway before returning to AMIC.

There are awards for the top overall women finishers, the top three finishers in each 5-year age group, and the top three male finishers.

Registration costs just $25, with a keepsake T-shirt, or $20 with no shirt. K-12 students can run for just $15 with a keepsake shirt, or $10 without. Shirts will only be available in adult sizes.

Need more incentive? The post-race party features Berkey Creamery Ice Cream.

Although the Run for Women 5K celebrates and caters to women, the event is open to all, regardless of sex, gender, age or ability. To learn more, visit the Run for Women webpage.
