Behrend wrestlers place second at AMCC championships

ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend wrestling team placed second at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships in Williamsport. The team trailed the winners – the squad from Pennsylvania College of Technology – by just 1.5 points.

Four Behrend wrestlers won individual titles:

  • Evan Whitesde, a senior from Monroeville, won a 17-1 decision in the 125-pound championship.
  • Junior Reynolds Jr., a junior from Niagara Falls, New York, won, 5-1, in the 133-pound championship.
  • Rudy Brown, a sophomore from Burgettstown, won a 9-7 decision in the 149-pound championship.
  • Steffan Lynch, a junior from North East, won a 30-18 major decision in the 157-pound championship.

The team will compete in the NCAA Regionals on Feb. 27-28.

Behrend’s basketball, track and field, volleyball, tennis and bowling teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Men’s basketball

  • Penn State Behrend 71, Penn State Altoona 44
  • Pitt-Bradford 95, Penn State Behrend 84

Jacob Dunkle, a freshman from Washington, scored a career-high 26 points against Pitt-Bradford. He scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against Penn State Altoona.

Women’s basketball

  • Penn State Behrend 78, Penn State Altoona 68
  • Penn State Behrend 94, Pitt-Bradford 64

Morgan Altavilla, a senior from Pittsburgh, became the program’s all-time leading scorer in the win over Penn State Altoona. She scored 22 points and was nine-for-nine at the free-throw line. She scored 26 points against Pitt-Bradford.

Altavilla has now scored 1,757 points.

Men’s track and field

Jake Egizio, a junior from Canonsburg, won the 400-meter race at the Spire College Indoor Games. He finished in 49.02, setting a school record. Lee Qualk, a freshman from Coal Center, won the long jump, clearing a distance of 7.00 meters.

Women’s track and field

Lindsey Hartle, a senior from Pittsburgh, placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the Spire College Indoor Games. She finished in 18:54.35 – a personal best. Jessica Park placed seventh in the weight throw, clearing a distance of 13.98 meters – also a personal best.

Men’s volleyball

  • Penn State Behrend 3, Mt. Aloysius 0
  • Penn State Behrend 3, Penn State Altoona 0
  • Penn State Behrend 3, Geneva 1

Jack Wilcox, a sophomore from Erie, had 13 kills, four blocks and two aces against Penn State Altoona. Luke Mumpower, a senior from North Huntingdon, had 40 assists and 16 digs against Geneva.

Men’s tennis

  • West Liberty 5, Penn State Behrend 2

Owen Sinnott, a junior from Erie, and Graham Louis, a sophomore from Erie, won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2.

Women’s bowling

  • Fourth (of seven teams) at the AMCC Round Robin 2

Lillie Holt, a senior from Pulaski, finished fourth in the individual standings at the two-day tournament. She averaged 189.0 points per match, with a high score of 213 against St. Vincent.
