Behrend runner wins 60-meter sprint at All-Atlantic indoor championships

ERIE, Pa. —Carter Tobin, a sophomore from Irwin, won the 60-meter sprint at the All-Atlantic Region Conference indoor track-and-field championships. He finished in 6.81 seconds, setting a school record for the second consecutive week.

Lee Qualk, a freshman from Coal Center, placed fourth in the long jump, clearing a distance of 7.03 meters.

In the women’s events, Lindsey Hartle, a senior from Pittsburgh, placed 20th in the 5,000-meter race. She finished in 18:29.10 – a personal-best time. Jessica Park, a senior from East Meadow, New York, placed 21st in the weight throw, reaching a distance of 14.20 meters.

Behrend’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Men’s basketball

  • University of Chicago 72, Penn State Behrend 48

The Lions exited the NCAA Division III tournament with the loss to the University of Chicago, which was ranked sixth. Jacob Dunkle, a freshman from Washington, scored 14 points. Matthew McDonough, a senior from Pittsburgh, scored 12 points.

Women’s basketball

  • Hope 103, Penn State Behrend 65

The Lions lost to Hope College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Julia Balaski, a senior from Mercer, scored 15 points. Morgan Altavilla, a senior from Pittsburgh, scored 12 points.

Baseball

  • Susquehanna 9, Penn State Behrend 5

Susquehanna scored six runs on six hits in the ninth inning. Silvio Ionadi, a senior from Pittsburgh, hit a triple.

Softball

  • Carroll 1, Penn State Behrend 0
  • Kean 9, Penn State Behrend 0

Abby Tingley, a senior from Union City, pitched all seven innings of the team’s season opener against Carroll in Winter Haven, Florida. She gave up one run on three hits.

Men’s volleyball

  • Penn State Behrend 3, Pratt 0
  • Penn State Behrend 3, Gallaudet 0

Jack Wilcox, a sophomore from Erie, had 10 kills and 10 digs against Gallaudet. Eddie Cebula, a sophomore from Bethel Park, had seven kills, five digs, one block and one ace against Pratt.

Women’s water polo

  • Penn State Behrend 17, Washington and Jefferson 16
  • Connecticut 18, Penn State Behrend 6

Mackenzie Rickerd, a junior from Rockford, Michigan, scored a career-high eight goals against Washington and Jefferson. Karis Barth, a freshman from Flower Mound, Texas, scored three goals.
