Behrend men’s tennis team wins AMCC championship

ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend men’s tennis team won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship, defeating Penn State Altoona, 4-1. The win earned the team its fifth consecutive AMCC title.

Vitaliy Pikalo, a sophomore from Hampton, and Carson Sauser, a sophomore from Clay, New York, were named to the All-Tournament Team. Both were double-winners on the day.

The Lions advanced to the final after a 4-0 defeat of Pitt-Greensburg.

The women’s team lost to Allegheny, 7-0.

Behrend’s baseball, softball, track and field and volleyball teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Baseball

  • Alfred State 13, Penn State Behrend 9

Tyler Burick, a sophomore from Erie, and Silvio Ionadi, a senior from Pittsburgh, each hit two-run home runs against Franciscan. Burick also hit a triple.

Softball

  • Penn State Behrend 9, La Roche 1
  • Penn State Behrend 6, La Roche 5
  • Penn State Behrend 9, Hilbert 3
  • Penn State Behrend 8, Hilbert 0

Head coach Ashley Gruber earned her 300th career win in the opener against Hilbert. Julia Jones, a junior from Wilcox, hit a lead-off triple.

Men’s track and field

Carter Tobin, a sophomore from Irwin, won two events at the Behrend Track and Field Invitational. He finished the 100-meter race in 10.65 seconds. He won the 200-meter race in 21.47 seconds.

Nicolin Pierce, a junior from Erie, won the 1,500-meter race, finishing in 4:02.65.

In the field events, Alex Cotton, a senior from Saxonburg, won the shot put, completing a 16.53-meter throw. Charlie Motter, a sophomore from Oil City, won the javelin event, completing a 57.32-meter throw.

Peyton Brewer, a junior from Erie, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the John Papa Invitational at Slippery Rock. He finished in 9:50.76.

Women’s track and field

Bethany Litwiler, a senior from Reynolds, won the 10,000-meter race at the Behrend Track and Field Invitational. She finished in 43:57.42. Ella McGowan, a sophomore from Erie, won the 200-meter race, finishing in 29.10 seconds.

Julia Balaski, a senior from Mercer, won the javelin event. She completed a 37.88-meter throw.

Jessica Park, a senior from East Meadow, New York, set a school record in the hammer throw at the John Papa Invitational at Slippery Rock. She completed a 43.35-meter throw, placing 14th. It’s the third time she has set the school record this season.

Men’s volleyball

  • Baruch 3, Penn State Behrend 1

The Lions lost to Baruch in the semifinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships. Luke Mumpower, a senior from North Huntingdon, set the program record for service aces, with 99. He also had 10 digs and 23 assists.
