ERIE, Pa. — Penn State Behrend’s basketball teams won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships on Saturday, Feb. 28. The men defeated Pitt-Greensburg, 66-61. The women beat Penn State Altoona, 78-61.
The men’s team will face the University of Chicago in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. The women will play at Hope College in Michigan.
The men defeated Hilbert, 75-55, in the semifinal round. Jacob Dunkle, a freshman from Washington, scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. The win earned head coach Dave Niland his 600th career victory.
The women defeated Alfred State, 67-57, in the semifinal. Lilly Palladino, a junior from Export, scored a career-high 22 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds and made four blocks.
Behrend’s baseball, track and field, volleyball, wrestling and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:
Baseball
- Penn State Behrend 14, Albion 3
- Penn State Behrend 6, Hiram 5
- Heidelberg 3, Penn State Behrend 2
Adam Cooper, a junior from State College, hit a home run and two doubles against Albion, earning five RBIs. Silvio Ionadi, a senior from Pittsburgh, hit a three-run home run against Hiram.
Men’s track and field
- Second (of 11 teams) at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championships
Carter Tobin, a sophomore from Irwin, won the 200-meter dash, finishing in 21.93 seconds. He was second in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 6.87 seconds. Derek Hillhouse, a senior from Erie, won the high jump, clearing a height of 1.95 meters. Behrend’s distance medley team — Aidan Reinsel, Ethan Hunt, Drew Knight and Ethan Vaughan — also won, finishing in 10:33.25.
Women’s track and field
- Ninth (of 11 teams) at the SUNYAC championships
Jessica Park, a senior from East Meadow, New York, set a school record in the weight throw, clearing a distance of 14.54 meters. She placed sixth.
Men’s volleyball
- Penn State Behrend 3, Bethany 0
- Penn State Behrend 3, Grove City 0
Middle hitter Lewis Rhodes, a senior from Reston, Virginia, tied the program record for career blocks, with 323.
Wrestling
- Ninth (of 20 teams) at the NCAA Division III regionals
Evan Whiteside, a senior from Monroeville, placed fourth in the 125-pound bouts. He had two pins and won a 16-9 decision. Rudy Brown, a sophomore from Burgettstown, placed fourth in the 149-pound bouts. He finished with a pin and three wins by decision.

Dylan Scherping, a junior from Harleysville, scored five goals against Wheaton. Mackenzie Rickerd, a junior from Rockford, Michigan, scored four. Monica Villasenor, a senior from San Gabriel, California, set the program record for goals scored by a goalie, with six. She scored against Grove City.
