MONACA, Pa. — Penn State will celebrate its 11th GivingTuesday on Dec. 2 — and Penn State Beaver invites alumni and friends to be a part of the event by making a gift to support the redesign of the Lion Shrine area on campus to help make it accessible to everyone.
Penn State Beaver Director of Development Andrew DiPietrantonio said he learned the importance of accessibility as a student at Penn State when he took a course, "Recreation for Persons with Disabilities," that required students to spend six hours in a wheelchair.
“I’d like to take what I learned at Penn State and bring it to the Beaver campus,” DiPietrantonio said. “We are all one Penn State, but our shrine is not accessible to all.”
The shrine currently sits atop a mound and is surrounded by landscaping. Funds raised through GivingTuesday will be used to flatten the ground and create a clear area around the shrine.
True to Penn State GivingTuesday tradition, the celebration is kicking off early on Monday, Dec. 1, at 18:55 (6:55 p.m. EST) — a nod to the year in which the University was founded. Those interested in contributing to the Lion Shrine refurbishment before December can make an early gift on Penn State’s GivingTuesday event page.
“We hope to make our Lion Shrine accessible for all ages. Penn State is alive and well in Beaver County, and there is nothing more iconic than a picture with the Lion Shrine,” DiPietrantonio said.
Gifts made on GivingTuesday advance the University’s historic land-grant mission to serve and lead. Through philanthropy, alumni and friends are helping students to join the Penn State family and prepare for lifelong success; driving research, outreach and economic development that grow our shared strength and readiness for the future; and increasing the University’s impact for families, patients and communities across the commonwealth and around the world.
