UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Al Karosas, general manager of Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center, has been selected to serve as an instructor at the International Association of Venue Managers’ (IAVM) Venue Management School — a prestigious recognition in the live entertainment and public assembly industry.

Karosas’ appointment marks a full-circle moment in a career shaped by a deep connection to IAVM’s educational programs, particularly the Venue Management School, which he said he credits with helping launch his professional journey. Karosas graduated from the program in 1999, completed IAVM’s Graduate Institute in 2014, and earned his Certified Venue Executive (CVE) designation in 2015. The CVE is internationally recognized as the highest level of professional certification in the venue industry, awarded to individuals who demonstrate significant expertise, experience and leadership. It is a mark of excellence respected by both industry peers and external stakeholders.

“It’s amazing how things come full circle,” Karosas said. “The IAVM has been an invaluable resource throughout my career. The people I’ve met, the conferences I’ve attended, and the education I’ve received have all played a role in my success. Venue Management School, in particular, gave me the tools and connections I needed to thrive in this industry.”

Now, with more than two decades of hands-on experience in venue leadership, Karosas will return to the program — this time as an instructor — to mentor future venue professionals.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be invited to teach at VMS,” he added. “I’m excited to contribute to the development of future leaders and give back to a program that has meant so much to me.”

Karosas’ latest recognition is especially meaningful given his long-standing connection to Penn State and the Bryce Jordan Center. A 1995 graduate of Penn State with a degree in exercise and sport science, he began his career at the BJC before the building even opened its doors — applying for any available position and starting as a marketing assistant. His “I can do that” attitude and versatility quickly set him apart steadily building experience across nearly every facet of venue operations. His dedication and leadership propelled him through roles of increasing responsibility, including assistant general manager of the Bryce Jordan Center and acting general manager of the Pegula Ice Arena. In 2015, following a nationwide search, Karosas was named general manager of the Bryce Jordan Center, succeeding Bob Howard, who had managed the arena since its opening in 1996.

In addition to his leadership at the Bryce Jordan Center, Karosas remains actively involved in advancing the live entertainment and tourism industry. He currently serves on the board of the Happy Valley Sports and Entertainment Alliance, supporting regional efforts to grow and enhance the local economy through sports and events.

Karosas has also been widely recognized for his contributions to the industry and the community. He was published twice in Facility Manager magazine (November 2004 and August 2008), received the Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal for his role in Operation Salute, and was honored with the Kevin Steinberg Award for his longstanding support of THON. From 2000 to 2004, he served on IAVM’s University Committee, further strengthening his ties to venue management education. A frequent speaker and thought leader, Karosas has presented at the Sports Business Journal’s Security Conference and Cost Management Conference, Pollstar, and multiple IAVM national conferences. Karosas’ selection to the school’s instructional team affirms his position as a respected leader in the field.

The Venue Management School, held annually each June, is a cornerstone educational initiative of IAVM. The program offers a rigorous, immersive curriculum designed to provide professionals with practical knowledge in venue finance, operations, guest services, safety, and leadership development.
