UNVIERSITY PARK, Pa. — The College of Arts and Architecture’s Stuckeman School at Penn State is hosting a public roundtable discussion panel to explore the concepts of designing across generations and designing for an aging society at noon Oct. 8 in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space.
Started during the 2024-25 academic year, the Stuckeman School Roundtable series serves as an informal platform for those within the University community to examine pressing issues and emerging design research areas as an opportunity for future collaborative research.
“The Stuckeman School houses three professional design disciplines at Penn State — architecture, graphic design and landscape architecture — and three research centers (Ecology plus Design, Hamer Center for Community Design and Stuckeman Center for Design Computing) that apply integrative design thinking and solutions that require interdisciplinary collaboration to advance knowledge and co-design innovations to address complex real-world challenges,” said Chingwen Cheng, Stuckeman School director. “We invite the Penn State community to join this public forum featuring interdisciplinary scholars and designers in our integrative design school.”
The Oct. 8 event features a panel of Penn State scholars and researchers with expertise in different areas of intergenerational design including:
-
Ying-Ling Jao, associate professor in the Nese College of Nursing, who will discuss optimizing environmental design for dementia care in nursing homes.
-
Matthew Kaplan, professor of intergenerational programs and aging in the College of Agricultural Sciences’ Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education, who will introduce the concept of intergenerational design.
-
Janice Whitaker, administrator and education program manager of the Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence in the Nese College of Nursing, who will be presenting on Penn State's new Age-Friendly University designation and age-friendly community.
The event, which is free, will feature presentations from each panelist before the floor is open for discussion. Lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. Register here.
