UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Eduardo Navas, interim director of the School of Visual Arts in the College of Arts and Architecture and research professor of art and digital arts and media design, will discuss his two recent books on remix studies, an interdisciplinary field of research focused on the critical examination of how existing materials are transformed to create new works, at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Arts and Design Research Incubator (ADRI), 14 Borland Building.
Navas, an affiliate faculty member in the ADRI since 2016, is the author of “Art, Media Design, and Postproduction: Open Guidelines on Appropriation and Remix,” which was recently published in a second edition by Routledge. The book is a concise guide to the creative application of appropriation and remix and offers a set of open-ended guidelines for art and design studio-based projects. In addition, it explores creativity with emerging technology, including artificial intelligence.
Navas is also co-editor and co-author of “The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies,” which was recently published in a second edition in spring 2025. The book includes numerous scholarly texts on remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aesthetics, ethics, politics and practice, and offers theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. Remix studies became a field of academic study in the early 2000s.
The ADRI seeks to improve lives through research and application of arts and design practices to health and well-being via interdisciplinary, collaborative projects that push methodological boundaries, link research and teaching, make innovative use of technology, and engage with University-wide research initiatives and priorities. The incubator coordinates and hosts a range of programming designed to foster, support and broadly disseminate innovative arts, design and health-focused research and practice.
