The College of Arts and Architecture will offer “Threaded Paths,” hands-on textile workshops exploring memory, personal journeys and the stories held in materials, on Oct. 7 and Nov. 6 from 5-7 p.m. in the college’s Woskob Family Gallery, located at 146 S. Allen Street in downtown State College.
Sponsored by the College of Arts and Architecture’s Office of Access and Equity and the Woskob Family Gallery, the workshops are open to the public and no textile experience is necessary.
Led by Charlene Gross, associate professor of costume design in the School of Theatre, participants will create a 10 inch-by-10 inch textile piece using thread, yarn, fabric, found materials, stitching, layering and collage.
Materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring small pieces of textile ephemera or fabric scraps that hold a memory, history or personal connection such as a piece of clothing, fabric from a family member, a remnant from a meaningful project or anything else that carries a story.
Additional materials such as yarn, thread, ribbon, fabric strips, embroidery or tapestry needles, scissors, straight pins, glue or double-sided tape or other small found objects or materials are welcomed.
The workshop is in support of the Woskob Gallery’s current exhibition on display through Dec. 18 titled “Threaded Paths: A Global Textile Project,” which is curated by Valerie Marcus Ramshur and comprises works from more than 100 artists, students and community members from around the world who shared personal stories through fabric, thread and found objects, reflecting on memories, relationships, change and the experiences that leave lasting marks.
Classes, student organizations and University offices are encouraged to visit the Woskob Family Gallery, a unit of the College of Arts and Architecture. Inquiries can be directed to woskob@psu.edu.
