In the Lions’ first match against the Bobcats, Newell prevailed by a 6-1, 6-1 decision in No. 3 singles while teaming up with Kody Cessna, of Apollo, for a 6-0 win together in No. 3 doubles. In Penn State Altoona’s second match of the doubleheader, Newell nabbed a 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles and again partnered with Cessna for a triumph in doubles, a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot.
Penn State Altoona won both matches by a score of 7-0.
This is Newell’s first career AMCC Player of the Week award. This season, he holds an 8-3 overall record in singles play, including a 5-0 mark against conference opponents. In doubles, he is 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the AMCC.
Penn State Altoona men’s tennis returns to action on March 30 with a 7 p.m. road match at non-conference opponent Waynesburg University.
