ALTOONA, Pa. — PA Dignity Day is expanding into Altoona this year, with the city hosting its first Dignity Day event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, in the Slep Student Center's Pond View Lounge at Penn State Altoona. The event will include a soup-and-salad lunch. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is requested.
The day will include remarks from Pennsylvania State Rep. Andrea Verobish and Altoona Mayor Matt Pacifico. Project Unite will lead a session on the Dignity Index, a tool designed to ease divisions, prevent violence and solve problems. Facilitators will lead discussions on topics such as what dignity is and how to apply it within the community.
PA Dignity Day was founded in State College in 2023 as a collaboration between State College Borough and Penn State as part of the international celebration of Global Dignity Day. PA Dignity Day State College will take place in the spring and is sponsored by State College Borough, Penn State Educational Equity and the Dignity Collaborative at Penn State Altoona.
“The growth of dignity-centered work is reflected in the partnership between Penn State and the Borough of State College, as well as in the many individuals who recognize their own value and learn about others' values,” said Karen Armstrong, director of the Dignity Collaborative.
By sharing ideas, listening to each other, and working collaboratively, communities can be transformed into places where every individual feels safe, seen, heard, and valued.
