Penn State Extension online course distills knowledge on winemaking

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Extension will offer “Winemaking Basics: The Art and Science Behind Quality Production,” a self-paced online course designed for beginning winemakers, grape growers and winery staff who want to produce stable, high-quality wines.

Participants will learn how to manage fermentation, monitor wine chemistry, control oxygen and sulfur dioxide, and prevent common faults such as protein haze, tartrate crystals, volatile acidity and microbial spoilage.

Among other topics, the course covers red and white wine processing, fining and filtration, sanitation, bottling, laboratory analysis, and sensory evaluation.

This course has 14 sections and includes readings, videos and knowledge-check questions. At the end of each section is a short quiz. The course will take approximately eight hours to complete. Participants must score 80% or higher on the quizzes to pass this course and receive a certificate of completion.

This course also provides credits towards Penn State's Food Science Certificate Program.

The course registration carries a fee of $314.25. Registration prior to January 2027 comes with a 25% discount on registration fees. This offer cannot be combined with other discounts.
